The summer of 2014 is not just an ordinary summer. The three weeks have witnessed
the deep friendship among us three young souls; the three weeks have seen the
strong awareness of our Chinese cultural root; the three weeks have brought out
the great idea of the establishment of the Association of Chinese Students of
Private Schools of the America (ACSPSA).
We met when working as Resident Advisors during a summer camp at Brown University, July 2014. Coming from totally different backgrounds, we didn’t expect anything near a friendship coming by in these three weeks; quite to the contrary, they found the essential similarity rooted in their blood, something that connects their heart. Hannah, was born and grow up in the States; Alex, was born in Shanghai and came to the States first to a day school, then to a boarding school; And Haidun, was born in Hong Kong, and came to States for Boarding school. For a long time, Alex and Haidun were feeling lonely and isolated because of the meager proportion of Chinese students in his school and struggling with cultural shock, adjusting to the new environment and educational system. Hannah, born and growing up in the States but with a strong Chinese family education, found it difficult to fit in her Chinese remarks and her beautiful Asian face. However, the acquaintance of us three quickly transformed into nights of talking, and laughter. There came the idea of the ACSPSA to create a platform to share our ethnic identity and connection with the Chinese culture. The day to say Goodbye still came, when we realized first how much we cherished the moments we had together and every moment was just like yesterday. We couldn’t control our tears and have promised to keep in touch and endeavor to build up and expand ACSPSA, a community of support for all Chinese high school students who may be going through the same struggle as we did.
This is not some brainstorming idea without any realistic support. We do have the awareness of the challenges and difficulties around the corner to fulfill the missions we expect this community to fulfill. And we are confident and courageous to make this community, this family the best we can. We wish all the best for every member of ACSPSA and every Chinese high school students in the States to have a wonderful high school experience.
